https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Letter_from_a_Freedman_to_His_Old_Master

"As to my freedom, which you say I can have, there is nothing to be gained on that score, as I got my free papers in 1864 from the Provost- Marshal- General of the Department of Nashville. Mandy says she would be afraid to go back without some proof that you are sincerely disposed to treat us justly and kindly; and we have concluded to test your sincerity by asking you to send us our wages for the time we served you. This will make us forget and forgive old scores, and rely on your justice and friendship in the future. I served you faithfully for thirty-two years and Mandy twenty years. At $25 a month for me, and $2 a week for Mandy, our earnings would amount to $11,680. Add to this the interest for the time our wages has been kept back and deduct what you paid for our clothing and three doctor's visits to me, and pulling a tooth for Mandy, and the balance will show what we are in justice entitled to"

I save too many bookmarks, sometimes it's worth it. The hidden gem fever is not sustainable, but unlike a drug you can actually reach those high points more than once I guess.

Binge

My first impression of Evangelion was that it felt like a show that I would have written as a twelve year-old boy, as it does come across as quite…horny. Shinji, shy introvert, is tasked with piloting a super cool giant robot while living with his hot teacher constantly walking around in towels and her underwear. His two co-pilots are also cute girls, one of whom he ends up living with too, and the other he shares a scene with where he goes to drop something off at her house, finds her getting out of the shower, trips and falls and lands on her naked body. Whoops!

I clearly opened Netflix at the wrong time and wasted a weekend rewatching it (and watching End of Evangelion for the first time). Still don't understand how it became a masterpiece but it certainly ages like a classic. Expected more from EoE though, maybe the bar was too high from what I remember hearing about, maybe it ends up falling in the same traps the original ending did.

Big fan of how those budget issues at the end ended up being considered art too.

"When technology is like any other tool and not an untouchable black box, that’s when people can use it more effectively. “Bureaucrats can be designers. I have seen it many times,” Pahlka says. “If you give them the freedom and a few of the tools, they actually very much want to do this. They will hack.”"

Maybe "hack" is an euphemism for working for free if as it tends to happen the fruits of that effort go unrecognized, but aside from freedom and tools the couple of times I do recall doing this involved something that just make sense so I could see a clear purpose on what I was doing, and something that doesn't seem like the company should do, so I can take it personal as a learning experience, or to make the work day shorter, or even to make someone else's work day shorter.

Now if I could see a clear purpose on what I do for personal projects, that would be awesome. I wonder how it feels like.

Delusion

https://strikemag.org/bullshit-jobs/

"You can see it when tabloids whip up resentment against tube workers for paralysing London during contract disputes: the very fact that tube workers can paralyse London shows that their work is actually necessary, but this seems to be precisely what annoys people. It's even clearer in the US, where Republicans have had remarkable success mobilizing resentment against school teachers, or auto workers (and not, significantly, against the school administrators or auto industry managers who actually cause the problems) for their supposedly bloated wages and benefits. It's as if they are being told ‘but you get to teach children! Or make cars! You get to have real jobs! And on top of that you have the nerve to also expect middle-class pensions and health care?’"

I don't know if the fact that with enough free time I don't turn into this passionate creator but just end up getting depressed is human nature or successful brainwashing, it's a scary thought.

About Why

novarek: (Default)
I've been trying to post something interesting the whole day but I don't know what would fit that category, yet I keep thinking I have a lot to say.

Is it me fooling myself? Is it what I'm thinking worth sharing? I guess the only way to know is forcing the stuff to actually come out.

Not exactly a great motivation, but at least there's something present, and if I at least figure out why would I want to have a blog for anything so bad, then it'd be worth the hassle I reckon.

Journal will be mainly used for those things that are now called shower thoughts apparently, and maybe something else if is interesting enough.

Ideally it would be a place to practice English too, but my experiences with random feedback usually have as a consequence developing bad habits.

We'll see what happens
